LVC Aero's Zodiac 601XL E-LSA

Estimated basic costs from start to finish to get a Sport Pilot Certificate is $2250, plus training materials and pilot gear.

LVC Aero LLC, is a group of individuals who are EAA Chapter 328 members. They purchased the kit manufactured by Zenith for the Zodiac 601XL Light Sport Aircraft and built the airplane to be used as a Sport Pilot Training aircraft available to members of the local chapter. The aircraft was fitted with a firewall forward Jabiru 3300 120 hp engine, together with an instrument panel designed for training in all classes of airspace coupled with GPS navigation. The aircraft is scheduled to undergo it's final build FAA inspection and will be in the air flying by April 2008.

For further information on the Zodiac 601XL, see the article "Have It Your Way" - HERE - or

After completing the flight testing in April 2008, the aircraft will then be placed into sport pilot training status. The aircraft will be available to Chapter 328 membership on a first come first served basis for training and local (25 to 50 mile) flights for those qualified and checked out in the airplane. Training and qualifications will adhere to the following to have a flight slot assigned:

  • Flight Time in the Zodiac 601XL  * $50 per hobbs engine hour: CFI Instructor time $40 per hour.
    * COST MAY INCREASE OR DECREASE DEPENDANT ON FUEL OR OTHER EXPENSE PRICES

  • When you are assigned a flight training slot, the pilot is required to purchase 6 hour blocks of time (aircraft & instructor) set aside in their flight training account, beginning with $450 for the first block (Should you discontinue your flight training any non-used funds will be completely refunded to you *** after the next new pilot starts training)
  • Requires being a member of EAA Chapter 328 – annual dues $60
  • Sport Pilot training and/or use of the aircraft requires 80 hours of volunteer time in the local EAA Chapter during the first year (evaluated monthly) following your first flight, plus actively attending events and meetings
  • For student pilots: Before flight in the aircraft begins, we require your passing the Sport Pilot Knowledge exam via the FAA computer system at Interstate Aviation in Moscow Idaho. If you are already a current FAA Certified Sport Pilot or above, acceptance requires the LVC Aero designated instructor pilot check out (plan for 5 to 8 hours of instructor time if new to the aircraft). * Instructor endorsed biannual flight review is included for the flight and instructor check-out time.
  • Solo flight in the Zodiac aircraft requires the pilot to purchase their own non-owners/renters liability and hull damage insurance policy

* To fly the Zodiac 601XL requires a flight review with the designated Aero LVC flight instructor 6 months after starting flying and annually there-after
